2023 Country Pennants huge success

Member for Central Wheatbelt Mia Davies has congratulated the Northam Swimming Club and its organising committee for the outstanding success of the 2023 Country Pennants held in Northam over the March long weekend.

Ms Davies said the first Country Pennants were held in Northam in 1959 and sixty-four years later the event was still an important date on Swimming WA’s calendar.

“The atmosphere was electric at the Northam Swimming Pool with Clubs from every corner of the State travelling to participate,” she said.

“The event attracts around 1,000 people over the course of the weekend, including competitors, coaches, volunteers, officials, and supporters.

“Congratulations to Northam Swimming Club for hosting and running such a significant event, bringing the crowds to the Avon Valley.

“What an amazing feat to co-ordinate nearly 600 competitors and 30 Clubs for what has been called one of the best pennants meets ever.

“Special mention to Jocelyn Ryan, Leanne Hunt, Kerrie Cook, Jo Stephens and Erin Neilsen for their monumental effort behind the scenes to manage volunteers, officials, swimmers, spectators, food, merchandise, medals, safety and sponsorship.”

Ms Davies said the two-day competition provided an opportunity for all regional clubs to mingle and compete in one of the most supportive and friendly environments possible.

“Every swimmer was applauded, voices lost, and high-fives dished out between Clubs after every race,” she said.
