Cook Labor Government Walks Away from Port Hedland - Again

Hon Julie Freeman MLC has condemned the Cook Labor Government for abandoning the people of Port Hedland, following confirmation that the town's buyback scheme has come to an end without a clear plan for what comes next.

Ms Freeman said the decision is yet another example of a government full of big ideas and glossy announcements, but short on delivery when it matters most.

"Since coming to power in 2017, Labor has trashed Port Hedland's future," Ms Freeman said.

"The port may be booming, but the people of Port Hedland are being overlooked - their town left to carry the burden without the investment it deserves."

"The people of Port Hedland deserve to live in a thriving, modern regional city. Instead, they're stuck in what feels like a half-finished renovation - no coherent plan, no transparent budget, and no timeline for when the job will finally be finished."

Ms Freeman said families, workers and businesses in the Pilbara have been left in limbo for years while the government tinkers around the edges and shifts responsibility.

"This is typical of the Cook Labor Government. They can announce, plan and start work on a racetrack and entertainment precinct in Perth in record time, but when it comes to regional Western Australia, they drag their feet and walk away from the hard work."

She said the contrast highlights misplaced priorities.

"Port Hedland is the engine room of our economy. The wealth generated in the Pilbara keeps this state moving. Yet when it comes to reinvesting in the regions - in housing, infrastructure and long-term planning - this government simply isn't interested."

Ms Freeman called on the Cook Labor Government to immediately outline a clear, funded plan for Port Hedland's future.

"It's about time this government spent the money where they earn the money and returned a fair share of the state's wealth to the Pilbara.

"Regional Western Australians are tired of being treated as an afterthought. Port Hedland deserves certainty, investment and leadership - not excuses."
