Delayed Fishing Notice Shows Minister’s Incompetence

Shadow Fisheries Minister Kirrilee Warr has called for the Minister for Fisheries to resign after it was revealed the Cook Labor Government published a legally required compensation notice more than a month after announcing its demersal fishing bans.

The notice, published in The West Australian on January 7, is a mandatory legal step that must be taken before any commercial fisher can access compensation.

Ms Warr said it was “staggering incompetence” and a simple administrative error that could force decent, hardworking families to the wall.

“The Minister should have posted this notice three months prior to the closure, but the Minister has only just realised this. It’s a disgrace.

“Why was this notice not published on December 3 when the bans were first announced?

“The ban and its planning have been an unmitigated disaster which is crucifying honest, hardworking people.

“If the Minister has any shred of decency, she should resign immediately.” Ms Warr said.
