Geraldton fishers come out in force to question demersal fishing ban
Member for Geraldton Kirrilee Warr MLA has echoed the frustrations held by those impacted by the Cook Labor Government's demersal fishing ban, demanding a parliamentary inquiry into WA's fisheries.
Ms Warr, Shane Love Leader of the Nationals, and Shadow Minister for Agriculture Lachlan Hunter were all in attendance at the Geraldton Fishing Forum on Thursday to hear from concerned fisherman, as well as those who have been indirectly impacted by these bans.
"Fishing is a key pillar of our community, and this ban threatens to impact not only career fishermen, but the recreational sector, tackle shops, boat dealers, restauranteurs, and the general population who enjoy fish," Ms Warr said.
"In Geraldton, fishers are angry, and justifiably so. They are frustrated at the lack of consultation, the lack of consideration, and the lack of care shown towards their sector.
"The State Government refuses to discuss the matter with our fishers, and the community is tired of being disregarded."
More than 100 concerned fishers and their families attended the meeting.
Ms Warr said it showed the level of concern amongst the community.
"It's clear from holding this forum that there is an appetite for fishing families to have their voices known," she said.
"We know this government treats consultation as a box-ticking exercise, with only a select few being told about the problems, instead of discussing solutions."
Ms Warr said state-wide the interest was strong, with more than 33,000 people signing the petition for a parliamentary inquiry into WA's fisheries.
She said the impact was greater than those impacted by fishing.
"This Labor Government's track record shows they are keen to destroy industries that are key to regional WA," Ms Warr said.
"Farming, forestry, firearms, and now fishing."
"The tens of thousands who have signed the petition have said enough is enough when it comes to their livelihoods."
Nationals Leader Shane Love says the Fisheries Minister has still not responded to its long standing Freedom of Information request seeking all documents relating to the ban.
"Last week, the Minister for Fisheries told the media she had provided 3,000 pages of documents to us. We are still waiting. This is standard practice for this gutless Government - promises made and never met.
"The Minister also said she would be supportive of an inquiry. So, what is she waiting for? Bring it on."
