Government Finally Acts on Free RSV Vaccines After Sustained Pressure from the Opposition
Shadow Minister for Aged Care and Member for Warren-Blackwood Bevan Eatts MLA has welcomed the Government's decision to provide free RSV immunisation for older Western Australians in residential aged care is a welcome step - and one the Opposition has been calling for months.
Mr Eatts said the announcement shows that persistent, practical advocacy can deliver real outcomes for seniors.
"This is a win for common sense - and for the many families and healthcare workers who have raised this issue with me," Mr Eatts said.
"We have consistently called on the Government to fund free RSV vaccinations for older Western Australians, and today's announcement shows that when you keep the pressure on and put forward practical solutions, the Government is forced to listen."
In September 2025, Mr Eatts publicly called for free RSV vaccinations for people over 65 and aged-care residents, highlighting that a $300-$350 vaccine could prevent hospital stays costing an average of $2,370 per day.
Earlier this month, amid a 30 per cent surge in older Australians stuck in hospital beds, Mr Eatts again urged the State Government to act - nominating RSV vaccinations in aged care as an immediate, practical measure to ease hospital congestion.
"RSV is not a minor illness for older people. It can lead to pneumonia, serious complications and lengthy hospital stays," Mr Eatts said.
"We argued this wasn't about politics. It was about preventing avoidable admissions, freeing up hospital beds, and protecting vulnerable seniors. The Government has now adopted that approach."
Mr Eatts said while he welcomed the announcement, the focus must now turn to the effective rollout.
"Announcing funding is one thing. Making sure older Western Australians in residential aged care can actually access the vaccine is what matters," he said.
"We thank the Government for listening and acting on this important issue. We will keep putting forward practical solutions and constructive ideas to contribute to a stronger health system and a better Western Australia."
