Regional road freight funding blocked under Labor

Shadow Minister for Local Government Kirrilee Warr MLA has slammed the State Government for its failure to fund upgrades to WA's biggest regional freight program to assist regional local governments.

Reports indicate that the Wheatbelt Secondary Freight Network, with a joint-funding model across 42 WA Local Governments, as well as the Federal and State Governments, would no longer be funded at a State level.

Ms Warr said it was shameful that the program had not been funded.

"Local Governments are continually being asked to do more with less, and the news of this lack of funding is no exception," she said.

"The funding model is based on three sectors buying in, but the State is now refusing to come to the table.

"The program exists to get grain to the port quicker, easier, and safer. It's a win for everyone, but the Cook Labor Government refuses to see that.

"There is $217m in funding for a racetrack in Perth, but there is nothing to help regional people repair their roads."

Ms Warr said it added to the long list of responsibilities that have fallen to local governments due to failures at higher levels.

"Local governments, particularly those in the regions, are already going beyond their expectations to deliver for their communities," she said.

"Whether it be medical services, housing, or roads, they are being asked everyday to do more, yet they receive nothing in return."

Ms Warr said within her electorate of Geraldton, the lack of funding towards regional roads would have an impact.

"The City of Greater Geraldton, and the shires of Northampton and Chapman Valley are in need of support to fix roads yet are set to miss out despite the biggest harvest in history," she said.

"Under Labor, agriculture is nothing more than a photo backdrop."
