Toowoomba LDMG Stands Up for TC Alfred Threat
Highlights:
The Toowoomba Local Disaster Management Group (LDMG) has moved from ‘Lean Forward’ to ‘Stand Up’ status and Toowoomba Region Mayor Geoff McDonald has urged residents to prepare for the impacts of severe weather from Tropical Cyclone Alfred.
TC Alfred has moved closer to the South-East Queensland coast and is now expected to reach landfall on Saturday.
Mayor McDonald said Council was closely monitoring the situation and the Toowoomba Local Disaster Management Group met again today (Friday March 7) to continue preparations.
“We are not expected to experience the same severe impacts from TC Alfred as Brisbane and coastal areas, however, the forecast for our Region predicts heavy rain and strong winds,” Mayor McDonald said.
“Residents should take precautions such as driving to conditions on our roads, preparing your home for storm-type impacts and having an emergency plan if you live in a location across our region which floods or becomes isolated from flooding should that potentially occur.
“Council’s community facilities will remain closed until further notice. Our Customer Service Call Centre will remain available across the weekend on 131 872 for any urgent matters.
“We are asking residents to steer clear of our parks in coming days due to the risk of flying debris and falling tree limbs.
“Council teams are on standby to deal with this weather event, however, their personal safety is always our priority.
“I want to reiterate that the safest place for almost all residents of the Toowoomba Region across the weekend will be in their own homes.
“Residents should check on friends and family who may live in flood-prone areas, look out for neighbours and the more vulnerable members of our community as well as securing their pets and animals and keeping them safe during this event.”
