Turning Towards Treaty: What’s Happening Now?
Treaty negotiations have started in Victoria. This Statewide Treaty will be a formal agreement between the Victorian Government, Traditional Owners and Aboriginal Victorians.
It aims to create a fairer future for all Victorians and will focus on important issues like improving health, education and justice for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
The Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV) in partnership with the First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria has approached Council to help raise community understanding about the Treaty process and foster respectful dialogue.
Uncle Andrew Gardiner is a Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Traditional Owner and elected representative member of the First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria. Along with 33 Traditional Owners from across Victoria, Uncle Andrew is currently negotiating Treaty aspirations with the Victorian Government.
To keep you informed and help answer questions, Uncle Andrew will be joined by key First Peoples leaders at Hawthorn Arts Centre on Sunday 22 June for a community talk all about Treaty.
We recognise most people still have questions about what Treaty is, what it means and how it will benefit all Victorians.
