UK Issues Statement on Rwanda at UPR51
Statement by the UK at Rwanda’s Universal Periodic Review at the Human Rights Council in Geneva.
Thank you Mr Vice President.
The United Kingdom recognises Rwanda’s leadership on social inclusion and gender equality. However, we are concerned by some restrictions on civil society and media freedom, which risk undermining progress made elsewhere. We recommend that Rwanda:
-
Safeguards the right to freedom of expression, by ensuring the media policy review enables all journalists – including citizen journalists and online commentators – to work safely and freely.
-
Continues efforts to strengthen sexual health education in schools to address knowledge gaps contributing to high teenage pregnancy rates.
-
Reviews the 2018 Faith-Based Organisations law, 2025 regulations, and related guidelines to allow more flexible procedures for keeping places of worship open while ensuring compliance.
We have raised our concerns regarding the appalling human rights violations being committed in eastern DRC in other fora and reiterate our call for all parties to implement their commitments under the peace processes.
Thank you.
