UK Issues Statement on St Lucia at UPR51
Delivered at St Lucia's Universal Periodic Review at the Human Rights Council in Geneva.
Thank you, Mr Vice President,
The UK welcomes the steps taken by the government of St Lucia to promote human rights, social equity and sustainable development. We welcome St Lucia joining treaties relating to persons with disabilities, children and the environment. We particularly welcome the ruling to strike down "buggery" and "gross indecency" laws, and the Domestic Violence Act (2022).
We welcome the positive steps which integrate gender equality and social inclusion in its approach to climate change. We urge the government to ensure its criminal justice system meets international human rights standards.
We recommend that St Lucia:
Continues reforms to the criminal justice system, with a focus on police reform and case file preparation, to increase efficiency and access to justice, while improving police accountability.
Takes steps toward building police systems that are inclusive and equitable, and include sexual orientation and gender identity/expression in anti-discrimination law.
Continues to be an international voice particularly in the Caribbean region promoting gender equality and social inclusion in the fight against climate change.
Thank you,
