Union Calls to Back Australia’s Film Industry
The Media, Entertainment & Arts Alliance is aware of social media comments by the US President regarding a potential tariff on movies produced in “Foreign Lands”.
No detail has been released, and it is unclear what impact there would be for the Australian film industry if this proposal were to eventuate.
Australia’s film industry is critically important for the economy, providing diverse employment for tens of thousands of people each year, and is also an essential part of the nation’s social and cultural fabric.
In recent years, Australia has become an increasingly attractive filming location for overseas productions, including those from the US.
However, we also need an Australian film industry that is balanced between local and international production. One that fulfils its role of reflecting Australia’s culture, telling our unique stories, both to local and international audiences.
That is why MEAA, as the union for the creative and media workforce, has been calling for strong local content quotas on streaming as an essential step to strengthen our local industry, stories, and jobs.
We note that the Minister for the Arts, Tony Burke, is monitoring the situation closely, and we look forward to the federal government advocating strongly on behalf of the Australian screen industry.
