University, Roche Launch Partnership to Boost Health

The University of Liverpool and Roche Diagnostics Limited have launched a new Healthcare Charter Partnership aimed at improving health and prosperity across the Liverpool City Region.

This collaborative initiative unites NHS Trusts, local government, industry, and the public in a shared commitment to tackle the region’s most pressing health challenges. By fostering cross-sector partnerships, the Charter seeks to deliver meaningful, long-term change for communities throughout the region.

Organisations across the Liverpool City Region-including businesses, public sector bodies, charities, and other stakeholders-are invited to become Charter Partners. This presents a valuable opportunity to work together in addressing key health issues and enhancing healthcare outcomes.

The Charter focuses on improving health throughout Liverpool City Region and beyond, where residents face significant challenges such as cardiovascular disease, multimorbidity, and health inequalities driven by socioeconomic factors. Partners will collaborate on innovative research and solutions in areas including biomarker development, population health, digital health technologies, and laboratory automation.

Professor Louise Kenny, Executive Pro Vice Chancellor of the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences, University of Liverpool: “By bringing together a powerful network of stakeholders, we are strengthening our collective ability to address some of the most pressing challenges in healthcare. Our combined strengths create a platform that accelerates life-saving research, fosters ground-breaking innovation, and delivers real-world solutions to urgent health concerns in our local communities.”

Geoff Twist, General Manager of Roche Diagnostics UK & Ireland said: “Through our partnership with the University of Liverpool, we are already making significant strides, with advanced diagnostics, to improve the lives of people in the region. However, this mission requires the collective effort and expertise of many more organisations. By collaborating within an ecosystem that includes the NHS, public health bodies, local authorities, the private sector, and patient advocacy groups, we can drive further meaningful change and achieve more, faster, together.”

At an event held this week, several organisations and industry partners officially signed the Charter, including: CPI, Health Innovation Network, HealthTech, Knowledge Quarter Liverpool (KQ Liverpool), Liverpool City Region Combined Authority, Liverpool Health Partners, Liverpool John Moores University, Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, LYVA Labs, Science and Technology Facilities Council, The Pandemic Institute, and Wirral University Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

The charter marks the strengthening of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) the University signed with Roche Diagnostics in October last year. In March, the University also celebrated the launch of the Eye Cancer Artificial Intelligence Digital Bioresource (EYE-CAN-AID) – which featured technology from Roche Diagnostics – a state-of-the-art, high-resolution scanner to analyse eye cancer cells and tissues.

Professor Kenny continued: “Our partnership with Roche Diagnostics is a shining example of how industry and academia can come together to drive meaningful innovation. By combining cutting-edge research with real-world applications, we are not only advancing healthcare solutions but also making a tangible difference in patients’ lives. This collaboration continues to grow from strength to strength.”
