Unlocking More Homes In Morwell

The Allan Labor Government is unlocking surplus government land site in Morwell to help deliver more homes across Gippsland, close to jobs, services, schools and transport.

Minister for Development Victoria Harriet Shing today announced that plans are progressing to deliver approximately 70 land lots in Morwell – preparing the unused site at 10 English Street for more homes, with at least ten per cent social and affordable housing.

This builds on the housing investments the Labor Government is already delivering right across the Gippsland region under the nation-leading Housing Statement.

Now, the Government is doing even more to deliver housing in the La Trobe Valley.

A Planning Permit application for subdivision of the site has been submitted to Latrobe City Council for approval, with works set to commence next year, ahead of completion in 2027.

As part of the works, new footpaths and roads will be constructed within the site, as well as a shared path to connect into the adjacent reserve.

Development Victoria will work closely with Latrobe City Council, Gunaikurnai Land and Waters Aboriginal Corporation (GLaWAC) and the local community to ensure the project meets the needs of the community.

As announced last year, the Labor Government is delivering 65 homes in Outer Gippsland and 110 in Inner Gippsland, out of the first 1,000 homes to be delivered under the Regional Housing Fund.

On top of this, through the Big Housing Build, the Government is also delivering 504 homes across the Gippsland region.

As part of the landmark Housing Statement, the Government is unlocking and rezoning surplus government land to deliver around 9,000 homes close to jobs, transport and services across 45 sites in both metropolitan Melbourne and regional Victoria, with at least 10 per cent of affordable housing across these sites.

The Government is also investing $6.3 billion through the Big Housing and Regional Housing Build and Regional Housing Fund to deliver more that 13,300 social and affordable homes across Victoria – with 10,100 homes already complete or underway, including more than 2,000 across the Gippsland region.

As stated by Minister for Development Victoria Harriet Shing

“More homes mean more opportunity – that’s why we’re unlocking surplus government land to deliver more homes close to work, transport, education and services in Morwell.”

“Regional Victoria is a wonderful place to live, and that’s why we’re making sure more young Victorians and families can have the chance to call this beautiful part of the world home..”
