Upgrades Serving Up Smashing Opportunity For All

Disability access upgrades at The H. Thompson Badminton Centre are now providing safe access for all.

Minister for Sports and Events, Nick Duigan, said Badminton Hobart, based at the South Hobart facility, has created an inclusive environment where Tasmanians can improve their skills, have fun, and enjoy the sport at its finest.

“The association was successful in obtaining an Improving the Playing Field Grant, which allowed the upgrades to take place,” Minister Duigan said.

“The badminton hall is built in an ex-Hydro reservoir and is below street level, which made access very difficult as it required numerous steps to enter and leave.

“These upgrades have improved disability access into the centre, meaning more Tasmanians can get involved, and keep active which we know has great mental and physical outcomes for Tasmanians.

“There’s now an elevator to the courts and street access.

“These upgrades will make this facility the perfect place to rally with friends, ace your game, or simply enjoy a good time.

“Whether you’re a seasoned pro or just picking up a shuttle for the first time, these upgrades mean anyone can shuttle straight into action.

“As part of our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future, our Government is committed to increasing opportunities for all Tasmanians to participate in sport and active recreation.

“It is also a credit to the club and its members to be able to raise the $350,000 contribution to the project – it is a great example of the good work that can be done when government and community organisations work together.”

Badminton Hobart President Matt Stewart said Badminton Hobart sincerely thanked the Tasmanian Government for their investment in our association and the sport of badminton.

“Their support, including entry and lift renovations and an extended lease, enables us to deliver fun, fitness-focused activities to Tasmanians—vital to our mission of fostering a healthy, happy community,” Mr Stewart said.

“We’re thrilled to expand programs for those with mobility issues and are looking forward to continued collaboration to keep Tasmania active.”
