#BREAKING climate news: AGL will close Victoria’s coal-fired power station Loy Yang A in 2035 – a decade earlier. This brown coal plant generates about 30 per cent of Victoria’s power each year.
Just last week, Labor & the Liberals rejected our Bill to legislate for coal closure – so the transition out of coal is planned and workers are looked after.
Instead, the major parties are apparently content to leave coal workers and coal communities at the mercy of decisions made in corporate board rooms, like we’re seeing today.
It’s time for Labor to take a second look at our climate Bill and the comprehensive “Powering Victoria Beyond Coal” plan we released in August.
Our plan:
👷A job Guarantee for coal workers
💵 Secure and ongoing funding so the Latrobe Valley Authority can plan the region’s transition to new clean industries and away from coal
📅 A timeline of coal closure by 2030 that’s orderly and in line with the climate science
☀️ $10 billion in funding over the next decade to build the renewables Victoria needs to replace coal.
