Ellen raises resident questions about the proposed veloway bike trail over Moonee Ponds Creek
Ellen Sandell, State MP for Melbourne, asks the Minister for Transport Infrastructure the following:
“With the building of the West Gate toll road – the Government has committed to a new veloway bike trail from the western suburbs into the city. It crosses the Moonee Ponds Creek in my electorate.
However, the original design for this crossing didn’t make a lot of sense – it was a looping, horse-shoe shaped design that would’ve severely impacted the creek.
Residents, Bike Network, and others asked for it to be redesigned, and straightened. The new design would allow for more vegetation along the creek to be saved, improved biodiversity and amenity along the creek, and would preserve an old railway bridge number 75 as a viewing platform over the creek.
I understand the contractors overseeing the project are happy with this alternative proposal and have submitted it to the Government for approval. But now no-one can seem to find out what’s going on and where it’s up to.
My question is – has the Minister made a decision about the final design and will the government support the straightening of the veloway?”
