Our nurses, paramedics and mental health workers are about to face the most challenging time of the pandemic.
As our state opens up, COVID cases will surge and our hospitals will be put under unprecedented pressure.
The work our health staff do is emotionally and physically unrelenting. Already they’re taking on double shifts under stifling PPE, caring for people sick with COVID, sometimes even holding the hands of the sickest as they die.
A bonus payment for these staff over the next six months will go beyond platitudes and applause, to properly recognise the contribution they’re making for all of us, right when we’ll need them most.
The Victorian Greens are proposing paying up to a $9000 to public hospital nurses, mental health workers, paramedics and other clinical staff providing hands-on care for patients. The payment would be made until the end of February.
Giving bonuses to staff who provide critical hands-on care is the least the government can do to recognise their work, and retain health staff in public hospitals.
