The Stitch in Time
60% of Australians are overweight. One in every four Victorians suffers from untreated tooth decay. Almost half of all Australians experience a mental health disorder in their lifetime, yet mental health care is dangerously underfunded. As our population grows, so too will the statistics.
The Greens know that if all Victorians are to live a full and healthy life, our health system must focus on more than just end-of-the-road hospital treatment. That’s why the Greens have a broad range of health initiatives that address the way we live, the air we breathe and the different ways we can avoid hospital.
As part of our plan:
• All Victorians could get free dental care in a public funded, universal dental care scheme
• Junk food advertising aimed at kids would be banned, and foods would be better labelled to allow shoppers to make informed, health based decisions
• All pregnant women could get access to a certified, insured midwife
• People with mental health issues could access care as soon as they need it, following recommendations by Australian of the Year Patrick McGorry
• The primary care system would become needs-based, so that all Victorians could get better access to health care professionals like GPs, psychologists, even dieticians, before they’re sent to hospital
