Victoria is the only state that still uses “group voting tickets” – which allow dodgy backroom deals to decide election results.
Group voting tickets mean that if you vote 1 above the line for the upper house, backroom party operatives decide who your vote elects.
It’s the people — you, and every Victorian — who should decide where your votes go on election day. Instead we have a system where your preferences are bought and sold by wheelers and dealers you’ve never heard of.
This is why the Greens have called for an independent review into group voting tickets. Today our motion calling for this review was unanimously PASSED by the upper house.
🤔 What does this mean? For the first time, the upper house has unanimously called on the Victorian Labor Government to fix our broken group voting system. We hope this unprecedented pressure will compel the Government to finally act.
Every other state in Australia has scrapped this undemocratic and corrupt voting system. It’s time for Victoria to do the same.
Elections should never be bought. In a democracy, voters should decide who is elected to represent them.
