Get involved during National Landcare Week

The need for ongoing support for sustainable land management projects by Landcare has been highlighted by regional Victorian MP, Melina Bath during National Landcare Week.

National Landcare Week runs from Monday 1 August and concludes on Sunday 7 August 2022.  The theme for 2022 is ‘celebrating landcare diversity’.

Shadow Assistant Minister for Public Land Use and The Nationals Member for Eastern Victoria Region, Melina Bath said Landcare is vital in its support of healthy ecosystems.

“The innovative Landcare program, its facilitators and volunteers are at the heart of important environmental initiatives including weed and pest control, erosion and improving biodiversity.

“Since its establishment in 1986, Landcare has continued to be at the forefront of sustainable management of our landscape – whether that be on public land or private farm land.

“Landcare is a hands-on program driven by volunteers and it produces positive environmental outcomes at the grassroots level.

“Landcare activities such revegetating eroded landscapes, protecting our local waterways and improving farm productivity has wide reaching benefits for the entire community.”

During Landcare Week 2022 Ms Bath is encouraging members of the community to connect with their local Landcare group and become involved in activities.

“Many in our community would like to do more for the environment – Landcare offers fabulous opportunity to give back and create positive outcomes.

“Landcare is all about community – joining your local Landcare network is a great way to become involved in on the ground projects and work collaboratively with others to improve our environment.

“Our amazing Landcare facilitators coordinate thousands of volunteers across Victoria who undertake practical projects and I have consistently called for ongoing, rather piecemeal funding for the program.

“There are hundreds of Landcare groups across Victoria, and they welcome new volunteers with open arms, I encourage our community to consider volunteering.”
