New revelations expose flood review sham
Fresh revelations today again expose the Maribyrnong River flood inquiry as a sham.
Despite calling the review independent, Melbourne Water consulted its insurer and the Andrews Government about the scope of the inquiry prior to the terms of reference being established.
An ABC report, based on documents released under Freedom of Information laws, reveals a Melbourne Water staffer discussed making “tweaks” to the inquiry’s terms of reference after feedback from its insurer.
Melbourne Water and the Government are still referring to the inquiry as independent, despite interference by Minister for Water, Harriet Shing, and her office.
This latest example again raises concerns about the Andrews Government working behind the scenes to cover any conflicts of interest and any potential liability exposure.
Shadow Minister for Water, Tim McCurdy, said the inquiry was unacceptable from the Government from the very start.
“The handling of the inquiry was inappropriate and yet another exposure to an untrustworthy Government,” Mr McCurdy said.
“The Andrews Labor Government needs to be held accountable as it is unacceptable.’’
Mr McCurdy said that this inquiry is yet another reason why Victorians cannot put trust in the Andrews Labor Government.
“This inquiry has been compromised, Victorians and especially the people of Maribyrnong cannot trust the Andrews Government that this review is independent.’’
“The flood victims and people of Maribyrnong deserve better.’’
