Energy Prices – Senator Larissa Waters
15 December 2022
The fact that we are all back here today shows that it is finally becoming clear to this Government that the cost of living crisis needs urgent addressing.
The only ones not having a tough time are the big corporations and the fossil fuels sector. They are making record profits, while people are struggling.
They’re destroying farmland in Queensland while farmers around the New Acland mine have to fundraise to protect their water supplies.
And despite the damage it’s causing to our household budgets, national budgets and our climate budgets – there’s efforts underway to expand more gas in Queensland.
We do not need more gas.
We need to stop the gas industry from ripping us off, disrespecting First Nations communities, and mining and burning a product which is destroying the planet.
This Bill is the first step towards the coal and gas corporations taking a haircut.
The Greens demands are simple. No more coal and no more gas.
No more public money for the coal or gas industry.
Freeze power bills for two years funded my making these massive corporations pay their fair share of tax while we wind down their planet destroying industries.
It’s good that Labor has taken a first step to get off gas, but it will take courage to tackle these big special interests – and we will push the Government to do so.
