Labor guts environment laws by teaming up with Dutton – Max Chandler-Mather 25th March 2025
Max Chandler-Mather speaks on Labor’s “Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Act” (EPBC) changes, which the Australian Conservation Foundation say leaves nature ‘more poorly protected at the end of the Albanese government’s three-year term than it was at the beginning’.
The amendment has been rushed through the parliament to ward off pending legal challenge to the salmon farming industry in Tasmania, which is threatening the extinction of a unique, irreplaceable Australian species, the Maugean skate.
But this change means much more than that. The changes will prevent environmental challenge to up to a hundred projects approved under the act, including coal and gas.
Time and again we’ve seen how when big corporations tell Labor to jump, they jump. And if that means siding with the LNP to destroy environmental protections, so be it.
Our environment needs real defenders in this Parliament – at the next election Vote 1 Greens.
