Larissa Waters speaks to G-G pay rise: Just because something is convention doesn’t make it right
The Greens strongly believe we should cut ties with the British Monarchy, establish truth telling and treaties with First Nations people, and make Australia a republic, but if we must have a representative of the monarch of Australia, Sam Mostyn is a good choice.
The government may say this salary increase is just about convention – convention that previous Governors-General have had their salary discounted because of their receipt of government (usually military) pensions, and convention that the salary for the Governor-General align it with the Chief Justice of the High Court.
And it’s great to have an incoming Governor-General that doesn’t have to have a military background. And I think Sam Mostyn’s previous work has really led the way in terms of the equality for feminised industries.
But just because something is convention doesn’t make it right.
I’m a big fan of Sam Mostyn. Not a big fan of Australia not being a republic, and not a big fan of massive pay rises when ordinary workers don’t get the same treatment.
Until all women get a 43% pay rise, or all low paid workers get a 43% payrise, the incoming Governor-General should not.
