Lee Rhiannon: Sick of Coal
People in the NSW Hunter Valley are sick of the adverse health impacts the coal industry has on their community. Greens Senator Lee Rhiannon recently joined the local community in Newcastle (16 March 2013) to say No To Coal.
The coal industry has had a sickening effect on people in the Hunter. Dozens of coal mines in the Hunter, stock piles of coal awaiting export at Newcastle Port and countless uncovered coal trains chugging along rail lines are creating a growing legacy of respiratory problems and health concerns related to coal dust.
The situation stands to get far worse if the fourth coal export terminal for Newcastle Harbour, called T4, is given the go-ahead. The T4 project has been put on hold, but the greedy coal industry still plans to expand the mining and export of coal, which will further increase the health burden of coal dust and pollution on Hunter residents.
