Peter Whish-Wilson calls out Labor’s salmon industry pork barreling

With only 40-120 adult Maugean skate left in the wild thanks to salmon farms polluting the endangered species’ last remaining habitat, we should be working to drastically cut back the salmon industry’s presence in Macquarie Harbour – not fund it!

But that’s exactly what Labor has done, announcing $28 million of taxpayer money will go towards an unproven trail which will allow the toxic salmon industry to greenwash its operations and continue to pollute the Harbour.

With this major endorsement and cash splash from the Albanese Government, it seems almost impossible the Environment Minister will be able to do her job and protect the skate by scaling back salmon farming – a decision she has presided over for almost 300 days – despite science making it crystal clear it is exactly what needs to be done for the Maugean skate to survive.
