Senator Janet Rice shares the stories of four people living in poverty
Last week in parliament, I shared the stories of four people who are struggling to live on woefully inadequate income support payments.
I read the story of someone who suffered a treatable illness for 5 years because they couldn’t afford the diagnosis, but was finally able to afford it when income support was temporarily raised above the poverty line in 2020 with the COVID Supplement.
And as a result, they finished their degree and got a job in their field. What a powerful story of how breaking the poverty cycle enables people to flourish and succeed in their lives!
It’s time for the Albanese Government to listen to people on income support and raise all support payments to above the poverty line.
The Greens will continue to advocate for a Liveable Income Guarantee for all Australians who need it and raising all rates to at least $88 a day.
