Senator Rachel Siewert talking about the needs for MPs to take action in Parliament in order to match their public statements of support for single parents and people on Newstart.
When the Government’s parenting cuts were voted on in October, the MPs now speaking strongly in support of single parents voted in favour of the cuts.
The Australian Greens were the only party to oppose the cuts.
The Greens have now introduced a bill that will provide single parents on Newstart with a $40 per week supplement payment. The bill will also increase their income-free threshold and develop flexible work provisions for single parents and other carers.
This is on top of the Greens bill to increase Newstart by $50 per week. These bills will see single parents receive up to $180 per fortnight in additional support.
