Voice Your Opinion on Local Government Elections

Tasmanians have until the end of the week to have their say on the Local Government Electorate Bill discussion paper.

Minister for Local Government, Kerry Vincent, said the discussion paper outlines important changes to improve local democracy and representation for local council elections.

“Local councils play an important role in shaping our communities and deliver vital services and infrastructure,” Minister Vincent said.

“I encourage all Tasmanians to have their say about these important reforms to local government elections.

“A new standalone Local Government Electoral Bill and supporting regulations will be introduced to Parliament later this year.”

The reforms under consideration include clarity on eligibility to vote and run for office, and improving the public information at elections.

“We need to be on the front foot in ensuring our electoral framework continues to increase community engagement and confidence in our elected representatives,” the Minister said.

The discussion paper is part of the Government’s Local Government Priority Reform Program 2024-26 and is open for consultation until Friday 28 March 2025.

The Government is continuing to take steps to ensure local government in Tasmania is robust as part of the 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future.
