WA Home Builds Hit 7-Year High
The number of new home builds completed in Western Australia reached 20,639 in 2024, the highest level in more than seven years, according to Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) data released today.
Annual completions grew 18.2 per cent, the strongest growth in the nation and far outstripping the 1.5 per cent growth in completions nationally. Annual completions have now increased by almost 60 per cent since March 2021.
Completions totalled 6,146 in the December quarter 2024, up 33.1 per cent from a year ago, and the highest level of completions in eight years, with Western Australia on track to deliver 23,000 to 24,000 homes this financial year.
Dwelling commencements totalled 19,360 in 2024, up 46 per cent from 2023 and the best result since December 2017, excluding the impact of the COVID stimulus grants.
Today’s data follows other positive releases including ABS building approvals data, which totalled 22,194 over the year to February, up 47.4 per cent in annual terms.
Off the back of a range of Cook Government measures, the size of the construction industry workforce has grown to a record 155,200 over the year to February 2025, allowing more homes to be built across the State.
Other indicators show the housing market is returning to a more balanced position, with Perth’s rental vacancy rate increasing to 2.3 per cent in February, up from 0.7 per cent a year ago.
As stated by Premier Roger Cook:
“My government will never stop working towards ensuring every Western Australian has a home.
“We are absolutely committed to tackling the housing challenge head-on, and these housing completion numbers demonstrate that our efforts are working.
“Housing completions are at their highest level in nearly a decade, with programs like the GTO Wage Subsidy and fee-free TAFE helping to grow our construction workforce.”
As stated by Housing and Works Minister John Carey:
“These are really encouraging numbers which put Western Australia well ahead of the rest of the nation when it comes to home building.
“We’re seeing more new homes delivered and importantly, a significantly larger construction workforce to match, because of the range of training and workforce incentives we have put in place.
“We will continue to invest and deliver new initiatives that deliver the housing supply Western Australia needs.”
