Today, we remember a legend of WA Labor.
53 years ago today, John Tonkin became WA’s 20th Premier. Fondly referred to as “Honest John,” he enacted significant policies during his tenure as Premier, notably
initiating the appointment of Australia’s first Ombudsman, establishing a Consumer Protection Council, substantially growing state funding for education and welfare services, and instituting a program providing free textbooks for all primary schools in Western Australia.Despite his government serving only one term, John Tonkin remains the longest-serving member of the Legislative Assembly, boasting an impressive tenure of 43 years, nine months, and 19 days.
Beyond politics, John showcased his talent as a skilled gardener, with his rose garden becoming a noteworthy attraction in East Fremantle. In recognition of his contributions, he was honoured as a Companion of the Order of Australia in 1977.
John Tonkin’s legacy endured until his passing at the age of 93 on October 20, 1995.
