Canberra needs a freestanding birth centre....

ACT Greens

Canberra needs a freestanding birth centre.

Hundreds of people give birth each year in Canberra while still on the waiting list for either the Calvary Birth Centre or the Birth Centre at the Centenary Hospital for Women and Children.

Jo Clay MLA – Member for Ginninderra asked questions about waiting lists last sitting period and found out that 30-40 people per month miss out on a midwifery continuity spot and there are currently around 350 people on the waitlist.

Birth centre births are cheaper than delivery suite births because care with a known midwife has been shown to reduce the chance of unnecessary and expensive interventions. That’s why Jo Clay is sponsoring the petition calling on the Government to invest in building a freestanding birth centre.
