Tasmania’s Troubled Waters: Restoring Our Giant Kelp Forests

The Giant Kelp forests that once covered the coastlines of lutruwita/Tasmania have all but disappeared.

Consecutive marine heatwaves and warming oceans caused by the burning of fossil fuels, coupled with the proliferation of invasive sea urchins have these critical ecosystems on the brink of extinction.

Giant kelp forests are crucial to ocean health, they store massive amounts of carbon and are key to fighting climate change. They also provide habitat for countless marine species.

In this documentary produced by Senator Pete Whish-Wilson, Pete investigates the causes and impacts of the loss of our Giant Kelp forests, and importantly, the work being done by dedicated scientists and community groups to bring these ecosystems back from the brink.
