Easter Message

Today is Good Friday.

Christians around the world will commemorate the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

On Sunday, darkness gives way to light, and they will celebrate his resurrection.

The meaning of Easter was profoundly articulated by Martin Luther King Jr.

King said that, in the resurrection of Jesus Christ, we see ‘that this earthly life is not the end’.

Rather, death is ‘a turn in the road’ or ‘a little turn in the river’ – ‘Not a period which ends this great sentence of life but a comma that punctuates it to more loftier significance.’

At Easter, Christians will remember the life, teachings and sacrifice of Jesus Christ.

His values of service and humility, gratitude and forgiveness, tolerance and love have shaped democratic nations and peoples, including our own country, our institutions and our national character.

But whether you are Christian or not, Easter is a time for rest and reflection, of gathering with family and friends.

It’s a time for the Easter Bunny to visit, for chocolate egg hunts, for hot cross buns, and for a break from school and work.

On behalf of the Federal Coalition, I wish all Australians a very happy Easter, and a safe and restful holiday in the company of those closest and dearest to you.

Stay safe on our roads, and look out for one another. Please remember those who are wearing a uniform this Easter, taking care of us and making sure we get home safely to our families.

At Easter, may we remember the importance of the Christian faith to so many Australians, especially its messages of hope, renewal and new life.

This Easter, may we again reflect on how lucky we are to live in the greatest country in the world.
