National leadership on climate change and agriculture

Australia’s first National Climate Change and Agriculture Statement has arrived.

Launched by agriculture ministers on 13 July 2023, the national statement is a genuine collaboration between Commonwealth and state and territory governments.

The national statement:

  • draws on existing research and analysis and provides a ‘point-in-time’ assessment on why climate change and agriculture matters.
  • effectively presents a unified vision for climate change and agriculture; acknowledges and showcases the government-industry work already underway; and demonstrates strong national leadership.
  • it heralds a commitment by Australia’s agriculture ministers to support the sector and ensures Australia achieves its full potential as a world-leading, climate-smart producer and exporter of food and fibre.

It also includes a series of case studies that showcase climate-smart practices across Australia. These include initiatives that target increased productivity, improve resilience to a warming climate, trial low-emissions technologies, connect with First Nations communities, and highlight on-farm research and demonstration pilots, and outreach programs.

Climate-smart, sustainable and innovative practices are key to the future of Australia’s agriculture industry.

Read about the Australian Government’s commitment to the growth of a sustainable and profitable agriculture sector and its work with industry to drive a climate change response underpinned by climate-smart practices.
