Currently, only one person can be listed as ‘mother’ or ‘father’, meaning many same sex parents aren’t properly recognised on their child’s birth certificate.
These changes will enable a same sex couple to register as ‘mother/mother’ or ‘father/father’.
Like Minister Shannon Fentiman MP said, this is about making sure that a person’s legal identity matches their lived identity.
It’s the right thing to do.
