Rebekha Sharkie MP

This Thursday, I will have my first opportunity to ask a question of the new Government on behalf of the electorate of Mayo. Over the past few weeks, I have received countless enquiries from constituents across a broad range of issues. But unfortunately, I can only ask one question.

For the first sitting of the 47th Parliament, I’ll ask a simple but very important question. The new Environment Minister has stated it’ll be ‘near impossible’ to deliver the Murray-Darling Basin Plan in full by 2024. Our community needs to know how much of the promised 450GL of water will be delivered by 2024, and what is the new plan? The people in the Lower Lakes and Coorong needs answers, as does the entire state of South Australia.

But this isn’t the extent of the work in Canberra! Also on the agenda this week – I’ll also be meeting with Agriculture Minister Murray Watt to get an in-person briefing about the latest biosecurity measures to prevent a local Foot and Mouth Disease outbreak, as well as Aged Care Minister Anika Wells to discuss the challenges facing the aged care sector.

I’ll be sharing my thoughts on the first two sitting weeks in the next Memo From Mayo – coming to your email inbox on August 5!
