This week from July 2-9 is NAIDOC Week and this year’s theme is ‘For Our Elders’.
NAIDOC week has a long history in Australia, spanning over 100 years. It began as a protest by Aboriginal rights groups, before
evolving into a public movement and week of action. In 1938, on ‘the Day of Mourning’, protestors marched in the streets of Sydney. This was one of the first major civil rights demonstrations in the world.
It’s important this NAIDOC Week that we acknowledge the generations of tireless advocacy and First Nations rights activism that got us to this point in our journey to Truth, Treaty and Voice.
This year’s artwork was created by the deadly Bobbi Lockyer, a proud Ngarluma, Kariyarra, Nyulnyul and Yawuru woman.
