A man tragically died this week from what appears to be a bad batch of MDMA taken at a Sydney festival.

Thousands are converging on Sydney to celebrate and revel in World Pride events and parties starting tomorrow. it is alarming and outraging to know Dominic Perrottet has been offered the chance to have pill testing services set up – that could be implemented in just a couple of days, and could protect communities from harm or death.

But we have a chance to pressure them into action. Experts at Harm Reduction Australia who run the pill testing clinic in Canberra have told Cate Faehrmann that they can establish a pill testing service in Sydney in a couple of days at no cost to the government.

For all of human history humans have taken drugs, that’s not going to chance and we’ve seen a criminalising and policing approach make matters worse, and puts lives at risk.

Drug and pill testing works. It saves lives by letting people know what’s in the drugs they’re intending to consume, including any potentially deadly substances while also providing information by health professionals about how to stay safe. Just Say No has never worked and never will. It’s beyond time the focus shifted to stopping drug deaths, not stopping drug use.

We’re lagging behind more than 20 countries who provide pill testing services at festivals and in communities. Even the ACT Greens-Labor Government has established the first fixed-site pill testing facility in Australia after two successful festival trials.

So let’s build a groundswell of people calling on the Premier to urgently allow drug and pill testing at World Pride before anyone else gets hurt. #NSWPol #WorldPrideSydney
