Currently, there are no requirements for minimum standards in rental properties – things like flyscreens on windows, proper insulation or air conditioning for those increasingly common 40+ degree days – and because tenants can be evicted for no reason, there is an understandable fear of bringing up these concerns with their landlord. We’ve also seen astronomical rent increases over the last couple of years – more than 18% in the last year alone – which is having a massive impact on people who are already struggling to make ends meet.
