Rundle’s calls for dangerous intersection upgrade, successful
Member for Roe Peter Rundle’s call on the Transport Minister to take action for urgent remediation works at a busy intersection in the State’s Great Southern region has a positive outcome.
Mr Rundle said he was relieved on behalf of the Lake Grace community that, prompted by his Grievance in Parliament today, the Transport Minister has agreed to upgrade the road intersection at Stubbs Street and South-Kulin Lake Grace Road.
“I was pleased the Transport Minister had been receptive of calls to upgrade the intersection and has committed that Main Roads will undertake immediate action.
“Treatments, which we have called for, including rumble strips, bigger signage and different coloured tarmac are expected in the next couple of months.”
Mr Rundle said in his Grievance the intersection in Lake Grace required urgent remediation works following years of concern which manifested in a serious incident at the intersection earlier this month.
“A combination of compounding risk factors at the crossing contributes to its complexity for motorists to navigate,” Mr Rundle said.
“This intersection is notorious for traffic incidents and has a reputation as a potentially fatal crash site due to insufficient and substandard road safety treatments. Locals agree it is merely a matter of ‘when’ not ‘if’ a fatality unfolds if the intersection is not rectified.
“Locals report near misses on a weekly basis at this site and it shook the community when a serious accident occurred a few weekends ago.”
Mr Rundle said a road safety audit commissioned by Main Roads in 2017 identified a raft of issues at the intersection which contributed to the unsafe nature of the intersection.
“The audit revealed stop sign locations caused confusion and rail crossing signs were inconsistently spaced from respective approach directions as just some of the issues with the intersection,” Mr Rundle said.
“It is deeply concerning for the community that until now, no major works have been carried out since the audit.
“We look forward to seeing the upgrades taking place in the coming months and that the Lake Grace community can be assured a solution is imminent.
