The problem with Melbourne’s transport system [Samantha Ratnam 14/8/18]

For the past few decades we’ve seen governments obsessed with building private toll roads, doing favours for their mates at Transurban rather than planning a transport system for the community.

The problem with private toll roads is they are designed to get more cars on the road. That’s how they make their money.

And last week in the news we saw just how successful Transurban has been at making money out of us.

Transurban recently doubled its profits, and this year the CEO of Transurban’s salary hit $7 million.

This is why our transport system is failing. Because it’s been designed for corporations to make big profits.

What the Greens want to see is a transport system designed for the community, designed to get us where we need to go when we need to be there.

That’s why I was so excited to launch our plans for Melbourne Metro 2 yesterday.

Melbourne Metro 2 will revolutionise our public transport system, whether you live on the outskirts of Melbourne or in the inner city.
