It’s reprehensible that Labor have teamed up with the Libs to allow student debt to go up on June 1.

Senator Mehreen Faruqi has a private members bill to freeze student debt indexation, which would stop students from being hit with thousands of dollars of increases in fees.

This bill has the support of the National Union of Students (NUS), the National tertiary Education Union (NTEU), the Foundation for Young Australians, Suicide Prevention Australia, and scores of organisations, academics and students that made submissions.

Labor has ignored the loud, desperate calls from students, graduates, young people, women and unions who are demanding action on the student debt crisis.

They’re happy to splurge on nuclear submarines and tax cuts for billionaires, but even the most modest of relief for students are apparently unaffordable.

Shame.
