Helen Haines MP

There are many environmental groups active in Indi, doing important work on so many aspects on the challenges we face in protecting our natural environment and taking action on climate change.

I met with members of Wodonga Albury Towards Climate Health (WATCH) and the Australian Conservation Foundation last week and I was encouraged to hear from representatives Lizette Salmon and Bruce Key, and Phil Days from the ACF about the amazing work they do locally and of their heart for the bigger picture.

The group shared their concerns that the Government’s Safeguard Mechanism legislation was not strong enough and that more had to be done to reduce emissions. The Bill is being debated in Parliament this week and I will take these concerns into account as I consider my position.

Many constituents have contacted my office about this Bill and I have discussed these reservations with the Minister for Climate Change and Energy, Chris Bowen.
