$12 million social housing boost for Tweed

More people in Tweed Heads will have a safe place to call home thanks to a $12 million investment by the NSW Nationals in the state government that will provide 40 new social housing dwellings in the region.

Nationals Member for Tweed Geoff Provest said the new seven-storey building in Boyd Street was important to address housing needs in the flood-affected region.

“This development is a crucial addition to help people in need of housing get the security they deserve to secure a brighter future,” Mr Provest said.

“Projects like this are vital to ensure that housing supply is addressed with the inevitable increase in population.

“It has delivered 64 construction jobs to local tradespeople, and will house more than 60 people in need of housing in our community.”

The new complex is built on a previously unoccupied site, and will consist of 24 two-bedroom and 16 one-bedroom social housing units, including four units adaptable for the needs of people with a disability.

The dwellings will allow some of our most vulnerable a safe place to call home, with the development addressing a call from the Tweed Shire Council for more government support to increase housing in the region.

The Council, in 2015, was one of the first local governments to adopt a policy to address homelessness.

The development is located close to the Tweed CBD, as well as both Coolangatta and Kirra Beaches over the Queensland border, which both serves residents’ needs and facilitates a comfortable lifestyle.
