Greens push for powers to break up Coles and Woolworths 'duopoly'

Adam Bandt

The Greens will introduce a bill to the Senate to give the ACCC the power to breakup the big supermarkets.

Enough talk. It’s time for action.

These new laws would give the ACCC the power through the courts to require massive corporations like Woolworths and Coles to divest their assets if their market is unfairly inflating prices or blocking competition.

When people can’t afford to put food on the table, workers & farmers aren’t paid enough, and Woolworths & Coles are walking away with billions in profits, we have to reign them in.

Similar powers exist in the US & the UK and we should have them here too. The duopoly has has it their way for far too long.

“It’s time that the interests of people took precedence over the profits of corporations.” Senator Nick McKim
