I was so glad to hear the news the Violet’s prison sentence was overturned yesterday.

And I’m glad the the Judge rejected the claim that people like Violet are a “danger to the community” due to their history of protest.

Protest is a fundamental part of our democracy and it works. Sydney’s first Mardi Gras in 1978, the Wave Hill walk-off, the Franklin Blockade, the Tent Embassy, the Green bans – social movements change our communities for the better.

The danger to our community has never been protest.

The danger is the existential threat of climate change, the coal & gas corporations fuelling it, and the inaction of the Labor & Liberal Party.

People like Violet wouldn’t have to protest if our Governments did their job and kept us safe.
